Dr. Ratna Prabhakar is a university professor and teaches human resources and organizational structure, he is also regular reader of the Home Improvement Series on Nigeriaworld.com in India, and regularly visits the ministry (CCFI) website. Vani Prabhakar is a bank manger and they are blessed with two children. I was privileged to visit the Prabhakars in Vijayawada, India in March 2007. We launched several chapters of CCFI in India and I had the opportunity to speak in five different cities in the Andrea Pradesh province. Vani Prabhakar has been suffering through cancer for two years when I met them (had done a mastectomy) and had recently been going through chemotherapy from the cancer attacking another part of her body. During my visit, I went with both of them to the cancer Hospital in Hyderabad. While talking in the hospital lounge, Vani expressed a desire to do something for the poor dalit (untouchables) Christian women who don’t have access good healthcare, so they won’t go through what she’s going through with the help of early discovery and intervention. I promised her that CCFI will raise funds to offer free mammogram (mammogram cost is 1500 rp/woman – about $40) for as many women as the fund raised can do in her name. This conversation led to the formation of the Vani Cancer Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to educate Indian women on detection and offer free mammogram.
